I mentioned earlier this week that I was adding lots of content to our leaving cert tips site. We are getting the site ready for a relaunch very soon and it's coming together nicely.
Summer time is a great time for us to be working on the site as the traffic is down after the current cohort of leaving certers have finished up and are actively seeking college places for 2011.
It's much easier working on a site with someone else than on your own as ideas fly about a lot faster and work gets completed much quicker. I'm working on a pretty monotonous task and Sean is working on the creative stuff. When it all comes together the creativity and new design will merge well with the new content to make the site much stringer going into the new school year.
This will be our first year in charge of leaving-cert.net and we are currently seeking student bloggers and getting some really good applications so far.
Two heads are definitely better than one and it doesn't really matter who is doing what as long as everyone is contributing to the value of the site. That's the thing about online partnerships, it's just much easier than working on something by yourself.
I'm going to find out pretty soon! I'm currently working on a directory type structure for a site I part own: theleavingcert.com. I have between 800 and 900 posts to complete in WordPress and have currently completed about 70 of them. Now they are only bare bones posts where I had to include category, tags, post title and some contact details.
There doesn't sound like much work in that but it takes a few minutes to complete each post. I could contract these out but I want it done in a certain way and local knowledge is required to maximise the seo capabilities of each post. When I get the bare bones of each one of these blog entries in place, I'll then have to set about adding content for each post (I'm guessing at least 50 words per post. So altogether that will be 850 x (50 + about 30 words containing other information) = approximately 68,000 words of new and fresh content added to the site. Now that's a lot of work for one person and I'm thinking ideally each one of those posts would have at least 150 words. This additional content will be launched in a new sub domain of the site and should add a lot of value. It wont be public for a while yet but it'll be very interesting to see exactly how much traffic an additional section of a site will generate. TheLeavingCert.com is the biggest online project I'm involved with and it's a good testing ground to find out how much traffic can be generated by increasing the content and more importantly user experience of a website.
In March 2010 I stumbled across this WordPress modifications site. WP Mods is an excellent resource bank for anyone using WordPress to create a website.
The site is owned by Kevin Muldoon and the amount of work put into the site and valuable resources such as information on themes, plugins and handy tips and tricks to modify a WordPress site is very impressive so far!
If you need to know how to modify WordPress there's a tutorial section showing you how to install WordPress locally, setting up 404 pages, integrating WordPress and bbPress (something that I'm currently doing on another site - this is an excellent resource) and many more.
You can see from Kevin's work on the site that his knowledge of WordPress is excellent and chances are if you have a question about any WordPress Mods he may be able to help you out in the forums.
I've been hosted with Blacknight for two years now and I'm very happy with the service.
Yesterday and today I was installing WordPress and bbPress on the same domain for a blog/forum solution. I was trying to set up seo friendly permalinks on bbPress all day yesterday with no success. Lots of people have had problems with getting seo friendly permalinks set up on bbPress. I could have used another forum solution but I wanted a blog on the site too and nothing integrates with WordPress as well as bbPress. I contacted Blacknight's support at 11.52 this morning and Jonathan had the issue resolved by 11.59.
He checked the ftp error logs and highlighted the fact that the server did not support Multiviews
[Thu Jul 22 12:41:28 2010] [alert] [client 86.46.136.168] /usr/local/pem/vhosts/xxxxxx/webspace/httpdocs/forum/.htaccess: Option MultiViews not allowed here
I removed this from the bbPress .htaccess file and this fixed the problem immediately. So a 7 minute turn around time for something that I was trawling forums for all day yesterday. If you need a working .htacess file for bbPress for a blacknight hosted solution feel free to contact me and I'll send it on.
This isn't the first time I've dealt with Blacknight support. The last time I had problems with Wordpress .htaccess and Jonathan also helped me fix the issue.
So if you're looking for web hosting in Ireland, I would thoroughly recommend blacknight! Just wish I contacted them yesterday
Last year I posted some ideas for domain names on my domain page. One of these was mywebwill.com, I was just checking suitable domain names for some of the ideas from i want ideas.com and came upon this one for the idea of transferring all of your usernames and passwords for your online accounts to someone after you die. mywebwill.com was registered on the 7th of September 2009 and the idea and website have since come to life. Here's a summary of the service from the site itself:
My Webwill is a secure online service that allows you to make decisions about your Internet accounts after your death. The majority of sites we use on a daily basis are password protected – as a result there is no way for your loved ones to access your immaterial assets. For the people being left behind, the process of accessing sites and blogs is difficult and often impossible. Moreover, would they know what you wanted?
We have created My Webwill so that you can take control of your immaterial assets, even in the afterlife.
and a youtube video from founders Lisa Granberg and Elin Tybring explaining how the service works.
This is proof that ideas will come to life with a bit of though and some hard work. Why not check out iwantideas.com tosee if there's any ideas that you can bring to life!
