Google Chrome Download Location

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Today I changed the options in the Google Chrome Browser to change the location of Google Chrome's downloads. Here's how it's done:

To customise and control Google Chrome, click on the wrench icon in the top right of the Google Chrome Window:

customise_and_control_google_chrome

Select "Options" from the drop down menu:

change_google_chrome_download_location

Click on the "Minor Tweaks" tab and browse to the new location where you wish to save the files. You can now set your files to download to a specific location on your PC.

If you want to go a step further there's a check box that allows you to "Ask where to save each file before downloading". I found this handy as it lets you organise any files immediately instead of storing everything in a central location.

Loch Ness Monster spotted on Google Earth

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

You just have to laugh! Another siting of Nessy and this time it's on Google Earth :) Classic! What Scottish Genius came up with this one to promote tourism?

google_earth_loch_ness_monster

It was actually spotted by an security guard from Nottingham, England and can be seen on Google Earth under the following co-ordinates: Latitude 57°12'52.13"N, Longitude 4°34'14.16"W. The Sun have a blown up picture of it here and I have to say that assuming this shot is taken from space this looks like a speedboat to me :) It's all good fun anyway and when I heard it on the radio I had to go and have a look for myself :)

IE 6 Must Go

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

You'll see back over the last week that I've launched a couple of new sites, lucky.ie and topcommentator.com. When getting the sites up and running I was looking at them in different browsers to make sure they looked ok. I still have IE6 installed on my machine, for whatever reason I don't know why!

Anyway, I had a good look at both sites in IE6, topcommentator.com looks fine but lucky.ie is way of the mark, I wont bother a screenshot, it's best just to go and have a look yourself. I could try and address this but there's since been an IE7 and IE8 released, IE6 should really be made dormant at this stage. There is some code you can place in your website to give a warning to update if you're still running IE6 so I may look at installing that on lucky.ie in the future. Looking round at sites in different browsers it's hard to argue against the functional offered by Firefox but if you're looking for a real clean look it has to be Google Chrome for me. Google should buy Mozilla and tie up the browser market. They should also partner up with PC manufacturers and and try to get the new Chrome OS installed on new PCs. I'm sure they are doing this already and if they do this they could really tie up the PC/Web market. That might not be the best thing in the world for competition but that's what I'd be thinking about doing if I was Google.

Google to launch Chrome OS

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I'm back from my week in Blackpool! It was hard to get online over there as it was a family holiday and I didn't want to be hogging the car to hit Mc Donalds for free wifi. Internet access in the caravan park was non-existent... shocking! Anyway....

While away, I read the following in 9th of July edition of the Daily Mirror:

Googly for Microsoft
GOOGLE is making a new computer operating system - starting with laptops. The internet giant said it was going "back to basics" with the technology, which is aimed at people who "live on the web". The move will be seen as a threat to Microsoft's Windows system, which has dominated for decades.

Not exactly a massive article but it alerted me to the fact that Google will be launching a new operating system. I particularly liked the bit that says it's aimed at people who 'live on the web'. This is only a small quote, but it's a quote from Google! So it's nice that my domain name is in some way linked with a quote from the biggest company on the web about a new product that will probably be a major technological innovation in gearing computers and their use towards becoming wholly web based!

I urge you Google, please use "for people that live on the web" as the main slogan for the new Chrome OS :) That's a big ask, but in the long term it may add considerable value to my domain name for someone that wants to use it as a base for reviewing the new Google Chrome Operating System (I'll take $100,000 for it now by the way :) ok $10k will do! ). I believe that like the Google Chrome Chrome browser, this OS may be the most popular product in it's field in the long term as the world of the PC becomes completely web driven!

Right, without getting too carried away with one small quote from Google here's a bit more about where Google are going with their new OS.

  • Google Chrome Operating System will be an open source (yes it's free), lightweight OS, initially targeted at netbooks
  • It will be available in the second half of 2010
  • Key features that Google are trying to include in the product are security, simplicity and speed
  • Google want their new operating system to boot and get you online in a few seconds
  • UI will be minimal and all security updates should take place automatically
  • You can read the full article on the GoogleBlog, they've also added a FAQ section where you can see who's teaming up on this project and how you can become part of it. I'm looking forward to seeing this next year and will be watching the blog for updates on this product. As I said, I'll be surprised if the Google Operating System isn't the OS of choice in the next 5-10 years, time will tell! It's definitely good news though and it will be interesting to see where Microsoft go next. With so many recent lay offs, the pressure is on them to remain market leaders!

    Googles Analytics for WordPress

    Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

I installed Google Analytics a while back. When I launched my new blog theme a few days ago, I've since realised that I overwrote all the files for my theme and therefore replaced the Google Analytics code. I don't know if many people have made this mistake before, but it took me a few days to pick up on what I'd done. My Google Analytic stats weren't rising and I knew there was something wrong as I was checking my AWS stats that I installed as part of my hosting plan and this blog actually had it's best day of traffic since I started out. So this is just something to be aware of, if you're updating your WordPress theme. Yeah I know I'm spending lots of time looking at stats :) but I'll be making more of an effort to boost traffic very soon so it's something I need to be looking at.

It's easiest just to place the Google Analytics code in footer.php as the footer shows up on every page and therefore this tracks all hits on your website. There's a nice article on exactly what to do over at ThemePlayground.com. It cleared things up for me as I previously thought I needed to put the Google Analytics code in a few different files, but it turns out that footer.php is the only place it needs to go! If you're using WordPress, there's lots of other nice tips on ThemePlayground and I'll be checking back there for a few tips and tricks as I continue to update this site.
