Champions League Final 2009: A look forward
Sunday, May 24th, 2009It's all happening this Wednesday the 27th of May at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Barcelona V Manchester United. It's on my mind and I'm looking forward to it, hoping for a United win so I'll have a go at predicting the United starting line up.
I'll go for:
Edwin Van der Saar: the obvious choice really, enough said!
John O' Shea: Wouldn't be my normal choice but with the absense of Brown and Neville at right back this year, O' Shea has done very well and has played his way in to the starting line up I'm sure.
Rio and Vidic: Goes without saying that these two are first choice unless Rio isn't back from injury on time, but reports from the camp suggest all is ok for him to start (Johnny Evans who's had a great season would deputise if Ferdinand didn't make it back on time)
Patrice Evra: Had been shaky since the end of March and during April but he's back on track in the past few weeks and hopefully he's ready for Messi
Now the tricky part, Midfield: in the centre, I'll go for:
Anderson: proved effective in the semi alongside Carrick and Fletcher and that's the midfield I'd go for ideally but with fletcher out my next choice is:
Giggs/Scholes: Hard to call here but I'll go for Giggs on recent form as I believe he offers more in attack and Scholes would be more willing to sit and maybe we have enough of that with Anderson and the next man:
Michael Carrick: like Evra he also had a spell of mediocrity over the latter part of the season but in all he's been very good and deserves his place.
On the left: Wayne Rooney: obvious choice and the first name on the team sheet, will work up and down and can hopefully double team on Messi when needed.
On the right: Ji-sung Park, will offer more dogged work rate than the older legs of Scholes or Giggs might offer. He's not a fans favourite as a match winner but he'll work very hard for the team and has been excellent in the last month and rightly deserves his place. I don't think Fergie will leave him out two years in a row.
Up front: Ronaldo: Another automatic choice on the team sheet and I'll go him up front in a 4-5-1 as he dominated the game in the second leg of the semi-final from here and I think it's best that we go for the work rate of Rooney and Park in the wide areas.
That's my prediction on the starting 11. I think it's best to go for 5 across the middle against Barcelona and I believe that Ronaldo can do a job up front on his own. We have others there that might things up and Fergie may even go with Berbatov or Tevez or Scholes instead of Giggs, but that my 2 cents and we'll see on Wednesday.
If Barcelona do win it, which I sincerely hope they don't, then we have an Irish man to blame. I was pointed to that story during the week and found it very interesting!
