Top Commentators

I just registered two domain names topcommentator.com and topcommentators.com. This is my first time going public with any domains that I've purchased although I think I own between 10 and 15 by now. Now I'm not sure that these domain names are or will be of any particular value but on noticing that a lot of bloggers are now giving they're top commentators a direct link back to their site so I'm thinking I may be able to use these domains as an information zone on the value of doing this. There is obvious value in doing this for both parties but I may investigate this further and see who exactly is benifitting more from it, the domain owner or the commentator.

The global monthly search volume for the keywords is very very small but I can see this growing as more bloggers become aware of the value that commentating on other peoples blogs 'may' or may 'not' have?! So it's a bit of an experiment on my behalf . I am also going to use the domains as a base on which to comment on other peoples blogs and hopefully draw some traffic towards my site. Now this is a bit of a catch 22 situation as I don't really want to have people coming to look at an empty site but I do plan on reviewing other peoples blog articles and commenting on them right from my very first post. Maybe if I leave enough comments the whole idea of 'top commentators' becomes a lot more popular among bloggers :) (wishful thinking) and I end up with two valuable domain names :) It will be interesting to see how many visitors I get back to my site just from commentating on other peoples posts/articles. I am always reading other peoples blogs anyway but want to be careful to do this in such a way that I'm adding genuine comments on their content and not just spamming and trying to visibly drive people back to my site. Anyway, i'll run with this experiment for a while (maybe making a rule of commenting on at least 5 articles a day and see hoe it goes for a while. Any thoughts on what you think of this idea, please leave me a comment :)

Ps. Gimme a week or two to get this up and running correctly as I suppose I need to look into installing a top commentator plugin of my own and gain a bit more knowledge on the subject.

it works well for both parties - as a commentator, you get links back to your site (possible google love & traffic). As a blog owner the number of comments and interaction with readers increases.

the problems arise when the system is abused and people spam to get a link. this has resulted in a lot of 'nofollow' links which means the only benefit to you as a commentator is potential traffic... (no google link love).

if you're first in with a comment though on a hugely popular blog - it is an extremely good way of getting free traffic.

i'd suggest short-listing a few big blogs that have 'do follow' comments enabled and a top commentators plugin also enabled. That way, if you don't get traffic, you'll get some degree of link love from google (which helps boost your pagerank or rank higher in search engines)...

Yeah, that's the main thing is not to be seen as a spammer, i'll be commenting on very specific blogs of interest to me and genuinely reading the articles. It'll take me a while to get this up and running and after that I'm going to stick to a very specific plan of reading spending X amount of time per day reading these blogs and actively commenting. I'll use technorati to find blogs with high readerships (these are normally the best blogs to be reading anyway as they're the people making the bucks :) ) and hopefully I have a chance to get target back to topcommentator.com. This is an experiment in an area i'm interested in (reading blogs), I don't want to spend too much time on it but I'm hoping that more and more bloggers start using the top commentator plugin to generate traffic and hopefully I can get some value added to my site with the domain name and adding valuable content related to generating traffic. I'll be working on it over the next few weeks but wont even think about starting to comment until I get a bit more knowledge of the blogoshere and the tools people use to generate traffic. I'm probably going to try to monetize the site a 'wee' bit just to get some experience in the area but also want to be careful that I don't look like an out and out spammer and it's a genuine project based on the blogs I'm reading anyway :) There's lots iof interesting articles out there already on this subject which I can use as a base to drive the sites content and hopefully create some of my own too. I'm going to link back to my personal blog on it too so people get an idea of who's behind the site. Maybe it's a good idea, maybe it's not but it's something that interests me (trying to get some traffic) and you never know until you try! I must get the plugin installed and you'll probably be the first 'top commentator' on this site smemon :) I'll get you on my blogroll anyway when I open the site up to the search engines after 30 days. Cheers for the comment chief :)
